I discovered Italy in the mid sixties when I was assigned
to a NATO facility in La Spezia, Italy by the US Navy. Having been born
and raised in the Midwest, I had entered the Navy upon graduation from
UCLA in 1961, intent upon seeing the world. Following assignments in
Japan and Germany, the prospect of duty in Italy originally just meant
an opportunity to see a little more of Europe before heading stateside.
We settled into our home in the picturesque seaside village
of San Terenzo near the La Spezia facility. My two young sons quickly
learned to chatter in fluent Italian, thanks to our lovely landlady.
And I found myself enamored of all things Italian: music, food and the
Italian spirit. Although we traveled to most of Italy's fantastic
cities, Rome, Florence, Venice and many others, the two year stay in San
Terenzo was all too short.
During the next several decades, as I completed 21 years in
the Navy and started my own consulting business, I often thought about
going back to the location of my favorite Navy assignment. In 1991,
that opportunity finally materialized in a vacation trip to our old
haunts with old friends from the NATO center. We stayed in a small
country house a few kilometers from San Terenzo. We shopped in the
local villages, lugged our demijohns back to a little bar for refilling
with local vino di tavola, ate delicious food at tiny trattorie with no
written menus and rediscovered the good life, la dolce vita. DOMANI-USA
was born on that trip and has flourished ever since.
We would love to share the experience of the real Italy
with you and your friends and family. |
