For
many years, Europeans have enjoyed 'self-catered' country holidays in
sunny Italy. It is like having a home away from home.
Just as at home, you are the caterer, cook, butler and maid.
You shop the local stores for tasty local specialties, prepare
meals in the little kitchens, provide your own daily clean up, and enjoy
a weekly change of linens (if you stay more than a week).
You are expected to leave your holiday house or apartment in
reasonably clean condition - stacking towels for the weekly cleaning
lady and taking your garbage to the local dumpster.
One
of the more mundane things we truly look forward to on each visit to
Italy is a trip to the grocery. On certain days in some villages
this may be an open market. In some small towns this may be a
'hole-in-the wall' Frutta e Verdura offering VERY fresh fruits
and vegetables. Oh, the aroma of fresh greens! A small Alimentari
with cheese and meat. A Panetteria with fresh bread.
Sometimes we end up at a 'hyper-market' - a sort of combination
mini-mall/huge grocery/WalMart store. These are always clean and
pleasant and offer an incredible array of supplies, toys, books, small
appliances, and jewelry, and clothes and ... What we really enjoy,
though, is simply walking around trying to figure out what is being
offered. Check out our favorite - the candy Aisle!
The adventure
of mastering someone else's kitchen and strange appliances as well as
the local cuisine offer the satisfaction of self-sufficiency and an
enjoyable vacation experience. It
certainly offers a glimpse of the Real Italy as well as a savings
over hotel accommodations.
All
of our apartments and villas provide a basic kitchen stock of pots,
dishes, utensils and glassware, a small amount of olive oil, vinegar,
sugar, salt and pepper, Italian coffee, a bottle of water, (sometimes)
milk and basic cleaning supplies as well as one set of bed linens and
towels per week and bathroom tissue.
It is considered polite to replace what you use during your stay
(and perhaps add to) the supply of seasonings.
For
some, the thought of doing local shopping, meal preparation and cleaning
may take more time than you wish to invest.
To suit these needs, many of our
properties offer additional services.
Domani can and will do our best to help you with these
arrangements, as you desire.
Restaurants
are plentiful in or around all of our properties, so your self-catered
adventure may be limited to a little shopping for breakfast supplies and
picnic lunches and a final 'blitz' to restore order to your home away
from home.
