Fattoria Camporomano
Fattoria Camporomano
is a 70-acre hilltop estate owned and occupied by Baron Gianfranco
Pecchioli and the Marchesa Oretta Martellini, whose family has been in
continuous residence since 1630. Two beautiful villas front an imposing
great lawn defined by spreading chestnut trees and flanked by formal
herb and vegetable gardens set alongside the estate's idyllic pool. The
older of the two structures, built in the late 1400s, served as the
original home of the estate's noble residents, and now houses the Toscana
Saporita Cooking School. In
addition to serving as the proprietors' ancestral home, Fattoria
Camporomano is a
working agricultural estate, housing one of Tuscany's few remaining
privately-owned olive presses. In mid-to-late November, Baron Gianfranco
personally oversees the pressing of the olives from the family's 10,000
ancient trees. The estate also produces a limited quantity of fine wine
reserved for the use of the family, their friends and Toscana
Saporita. Fattoria Camporomano
is located in the province of Lucca, westernmost of Tuscany's provinces
and the most geographically and gastronomically diverse. With its
mountains, valleys and long pristine coastline on the Mediterranean Sea,
Lucchesia offers an array of culinary ingredients unmatched by any other
Tuscan province. Fattoria Camporomano
offers a perfect base for touring Tuscany. It is only 50 miles to Florence,
20 to Pisa 12 to Lucca, and 3 to the famous seaside resort of Viareggio.
Buses and trains are readily available and the estate is less than a
mile from the entrance to the A11 autostrada.
Several buildings scattered throughout the
estate have been converted into rental units. The main guest building,
the large two-story brightly-colored building pictured above,
is across the parking area from the office, reception area and the Frantoio
(olive oil production facility). This building contains three apartments
- La Contessa, Il Conte, and Il Contino (the
Countess, Count and "Little Count") along with the Cooking
School kitchen.
La Contessa
occupying parts of the ground and second floors of the main guest building, has
4 bedrooms (queen with single, single, queen, double) sleeping up to 8 along with
3 bathrooms. It has its own separate
entrance facing the large main garden and pool area of the complex. The
living/dining areas and 1 bedroom are on the ground level, with another living
room, 3 bedrooms, and the 2 bathrooms on the second floor.
Il
Conte occupies the rest of the second floor of the main building. This
apartment also contains 4 bedrooms (single, double, and 2 with queen or 2
singles), accommodating up to 7 and 2 bathrooms Its entrance is up one
flight of stairs on the opposite side from the garden and pool.
Il Contino is a small, 3-room apartment on
the ground floor of the main building, with its own separate entrance on the
side of the building away from the office and frantoio. This
apartment consists of a bedroom (queen with single), kitchen with eating and
living area, and a bathroom. It is suitable for a couple, or a couple with a
small child.
In a separate building, away from the office and frantoio,
is another small apartment, Il Fienile, a renovated hayloft. This 3 room
apartment - kitchen/living/dining room with 1 bedroom (queen with single), and
bathroom is suitable for a couple or couple with a child.
On the third floor of the reception and office
building is the elegant apartment Casa di Elena, named for your hostess.
This apartment enjoys a magnificent view of Lake Massaciucoli and Torre del Lago
Puccini, the site of Puccini's last home.
Casa di Elena, with 3 bedrooms (Queen, queen or 2 singles, single) and
1.5 bathrooms, can sleep up to 5 adults
(no children), within huge, antique-filled rooms. Able
to accommodate up to 7, Il Pino is a separate villa, about 1/2
km. from the main building/office and pool/garden area. On the edge of
the estate at the end of a road that winds through the olive groves, it
commands marvelous views to the north and west, overlooking the
Versilian coast and the Camaiore area to the north. Despite its
closeness, the feeling at Il Pino is of remoteness, there is no
traffic and views of the rest of the estate are largely hidden by the
olive groves. Parking is adjacent to the villa.
The entrance is up a short flight of stairs into a hallway. On this
level is a living room, a large, well-equipped kitchen, a large bathroom
with shower, and a large bedroom with queen-sized bed. The second floor
has a full bathroom with bath and shower along with 3 more bedrooms
(queen, twin, single).
Il Micciaro a 2-bedroom cottage that can
sleep up to 5 is just off the main entrance road and just below the pool/garden
area. It occupies its own separate building. On the ground floor is a
living/dining room with an extra double sofa bed, a bathroom with shower, and a
large kitchen. Up the central staircase are two separate bedrooms (queen with
single, and queen or 2 singles).
Le Ruote a rustic country house, is also in
its own building about 1/2 km. from the office area, on the entrance road from
Massarosa. Like Il Pino, Le Ruote also has a feeling of being remote. This
cottage sleeps up to 8 in 3 bedrooms (2 singles, queen or 2 singles, queen with
2 singles). It has 2 bathrooms
and features a large terrace with outdoor furniture and umbrellas, and wonderful
views into the olive groves.
