Gianicolo District
| On
the west bank of the TIber, just South of the Vatican, Gianicolo
offers the most breathtaking views
of central Rome. Since the Etruscan period, the hill has been a door to
invasions, witnessing the Saracen assaults and Rome's brave
defense to barbarian attacks, as well as the 1849 battle for the
republic. Yet the hill appears gentle with its pine and cypress
trees, and at sunset it reflects the glow of the sun to the
extent that the Romans call it "golden hill."
In the vicinity are two beautiful
noble villas open to the public: Villa Pamphili and Villa
Sciarra. |
