The
Piazza Navona area is home to many Renaissance palazzi
(palaces) with elegant apartments. This area street used to be a
papal thoroughfare, with imposing townhouses of prosperous
bankers and merchants. Now it is lined with off-beat art and
antique gallerias and trattorie.
In the heart of the historical center just a few minutes walking
distance from the Vatican, Piazza Navona, Piazza Farnese, Piazza
Campo de’ Fiori and about 10 minutes walk from the Pantheon
and 15 minutes from the Spanish Steps. Piazza Navona, for
which the area is named, is surely one of the most beautifully
baroque sites in all Rome. In 1644 Bernini and Borromini
constructed the colossal Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, symbolizing
the four corners of the world: the Danube (Europe), the Nile
(Africa), the Ganges (Asia), and the Rio de la Plata (America).
Unspoiled by new buildings or even by traffic; this piazza is the
perfect site for sipping your coffee and watching the locals and
tourists pass by. |
