The
Pantheon, a marvel of architectural harmony and proportion, is
the best-preserved monument of Imperial Rome. It was entirely
designed and rebuilt by the emperor Hadrian around AD 120 on the
site of an earlier pantheon (temple of all the Gods). The
diameter of its dome is exactly equal to the height of the
walls; this use of such simple mathematical balance gives this
temple a calm and majestic sense of the classical world.
Containing the Piazza delle Rotonda (The Pantheon), this
district is just a few steps from the Piazza Navona. The Spanish
Steps, Trevi Fountain, Campo dei Fiori, and Piazza Farnese are
all within a few minutes walk. |
