Casa Gallo-U01

For the last 1000 years high above the clouds, nestled within the walls, down the viuzza (little street) from the brothers in the monastery, and a block from the central square in the village of Montone, life has existed at Casa Gallo. This recently restored gem was built around 1000 A.D. in the even more ancient pre-Roman Montone. In the 14th century, the family Fortebracci (strong arm) called Montone home, and from here dreamt of and, for a time, held the reins of a unified Umbrian state.

Casa Gallo has a single bedroom (double) and bath on the second floor, with the kitchen, living/eating area, and working fireplace on the first floor. On the stoop is a plant-sheltered patio, with a table and chairs large enough for a comfortable meal "al fresco" overlooking some of the town's garden areas and tiled roofs. Casa Gallo is most comfortable for 2 persons, although a family with 1 or 2 small children can take advantage of the double sleep sofa.

Exploring the town is an easy amble through and around the "nooks and crannies" found only in such ancient environs. There is a restaurant within the walls, and a couple of coffee bars, a market and vegetable store, post office, and bank off the square. Up the viuzza is a pharmacy, the still in use monastery, and a small carpark (where you leave your car, as they are not allowed in the town itself except for deliveries). Just outside the walls, you will find a Pizzeria, and another restaurant at the Hotel Fortebraccio. Horse rentals can also be arranged for ranging farther afield and more extensive shopping/and supplies can be found in Umbertide a short drive away.

Curl up for an hour or two with your favorite Austen, Clancy, or perhaps a bit of Mayes. Spend uninterrupted time reacquainting yourself with your partner. Explore the storied military history of the Fortebracci, and their connection to the town's most sacred relic - a thorn from the crown of Christ, or delve into the history of the Vitelli - who succeeded the Fortebracci.
