Umbria

Umbria is an oasis of calm and tradition, with rolling green hills and fertile valleys, creating a peaceful and picturesque landscape. Walking through the quiet forests one comes across castles and fortresses. Medieval villages such as Spello, Contone, Corciano and Bevagna are beautifully preserved. Towns such as Gubbio, Assisi, Todi and Spoleto are filled with squares, Romanesque cathedrals, fountains, towers and Gothic churches, with scenery changing from gentle and serene to rugged and spectacular.

Although Umbria is home to the mystical city of Assisi and the very urbane Perugia, it is largely undiscovered and unexplored. Its beautiful rolling hills, verdant fields and hidden villages beckon the traveler to discover yet another facet of Italy.

Perugia is a fascinating and important city on a steep and large hill, overlooking the Tiber River valley. Preservation minded Italians have closed the city to vehicular traffic. Visitors park their cars in large parking lots and explore the city on foot. Long a center for the arts, there are many festivals and shows scheduled throughout the year.

Gubbio is one of the most typical towns in Umbria for its pure medieval characteristics and magnificent monuments.

Assisi home of St. Francis, this is one of the most famous religious centers in the world 

Deruta, origin of the world-famous pottery now so popular in the United States, is just 15 km south of Perugia. Its streets are lined with shops offering their wares at very reasonable prices, even when air-shipped home to the States!

Lovingly described in Under the Tuscan Sun, In Tuscany and Bella Tuscany, one of the lesser known gems of Tuscany, Cortona, is located just a stone's throw from the Umbrian border.
