Pietrasanta
Just 3 km
(1.8 miles) from the coast, mountains and sea blend together beautifully
at Pietrasanta, a small medieval town straddling the last foothills of the Apuan
Alps.
The town has Roman origins and part of the Roman wall still stands.
Throughout history, and even to this day, artists have appreciated the mellowness
of Tuscany and have been inspired to capture the beauty of this unchanged
landscape on canvas. Pietrasanta grew to importance during the 15th century, mainly due to its
connection with marble. Michelangelo was the first sculptor to recognize the
beauty of the local stone. Today's artists and sculptors are drawn to
Pietrasanta from all over the world. Their studios mingle with small elegant
shops among the wooden shutters and ochre washed buildings in the deep alleyways
that radiate from Piazza del Duomo. Thursday is local market day, a very colorful, fragrant, open air affair
which adds more than a little chaos to the daily subtle of the town, not really
a tourist market, but well worth investigating. The landscape surrounding Pietrasanta is smothered in olive groves and
vineyards. Narrow roads wind through terraced hillsides up to the tiny villages
of Valdicastello, Capezzano, Capriglia, and Farnocchia, communities untouched by
tourism. Collectively these villages are known as Versilia Alta (High
Versilia) and the area
offers the visitor unforgettable mountain walks. Inland lies some of the most spectacular Tuscan countryside
available. Just a
20 minute drive takes you deep into the Tuscan hills. You will come across
villages clinging to the hillsides, surrounded by ancient cypress trees and
silver-leafed olive groves. Local home-made pasta, Chianti, fresh trout from the
streams with home-made bread and sheep's cheese will satisfy the most discerning
palate.
Summertime visitors, can have
membership in a beach club arranged providing a surprisingly pleasant social
life for a family. Beach clubs offer swimming pools and snack bars and
restaurants, comfortable beach chairs and cabanas as well as an opportunity to
meet friendly Italians enjoying their summer holiday. These are very
sociable places perfect venues for meeting people where children and teenagers
can quickly make friends. Browse
